ABOUT THYROID AUSTRALIA

Thyroid Australia is a support organisation for people with thyroid conditions as well as their families and their friends.

Thyroid Australia is a voluntary organisation whose founding members have suffered or been affected by various thyroid conditions and who wish to help others in similar situations.

The aims of Thyroid Australia are to:

• Provide personal support, counselling and advice;
• Provide information and training;
• Raise awareness of and interest in thyroid conditions;
• Provide advocacy on behalf of thyroid sufferers with government and the medical and paramedical professions; and
• Assist in fundraising for thyroid research.

 The Membership fee is:

• $40 per year for individual members and non-voting health professional members
• $30 per year for seniors over 65, students under 25 and concession card holders
• $60 per year for a family membership - ie two or more members at the same address

For this fee, members receive:

• A newsletter - Thyroid Flyer which is published three times per year. Back copies are available on the Download page
• Free admission to public meetings
• Copies of 5 publications from the Publications List
• Access to our Members' Contact List scheme

Thyroid Australia has also been fortunate to obtain the assistance of a number of medical practitioners who have agreed to help in an informal way by serving in a voluntary capacity on our Medical Advisory Committee.

Thyroid Australia provides:

• Telephone support (we can probably find someone with your condition for you to talk to);
• A quarterly newsletter - copies can be downloaded from this site;
• Regular public meetings;
• Local support groups in some areas - details here;
• Contact lists of other members:
  • By post code (with surrounding areas)
  • For uncommon thyroid conditions -cancer, congenital hypothyroidism, parathyroid conditions
  • For Students under 25
  • For men with thyroid conditions;
• A large collection of information on all aspects of thyroid disease;
• Information in languages other than English

Thyroid Australia is constituted under Australian law as a public company limited by guarantee. We operate under the control of a Board of Directors which is responsible to our members according to a constitution which has been registered with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). The affairs of the company are audited each year by a registered company auditor. A copy of the constitution is available to members on request.

Although based in Melbourne, Thyroid Australia is structured to enable local support groups to be formed and encouraged in regional areas and amongst individual communities focussing on those who are remote from or do not have easy access to other support structures. We would welcome calls from anyone who would like to organise a local support group with our assistance.

Thyroid Australia is approved by the Australian Taxation Office as both a Deductible Gift Recipient and as Income Tax Exempt. Donations (Gifts) of $2.00 or more to Thyroid Australia by Australian tax payers are tax deductible.
