My name is Louise and I am 66 years of age and about 10 weeks ago I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. I was so relieved to finally have a name for the symptoms I had been having for many years.

The main symptom I couldn’t deal with was no energy. I have been taking Felodipine 2.5mg daily for high blood pressure for many years, and about 5 years ago I started taking tablets for high cholesterol as well. I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago for prolapse and from then on I haven’t really felt well since. One night I got out of bed to go to the toilet and I suddenly felt all clammy and weak and though I would faint. I felt that my heart had stopped for a few seconds.

I went to my doctor and tried to explain how I felt and she took my blood pressure and my pulse and I had an ECG but she said I was okay. Then it happened again when I was at the shopping centre, this sudden weakness. My voice started getting croaky as if I had a cold and it would last for a week or so and it was okay again. I asked my doctor if it was hormones and she said no, but she told me if my voice stayed husky for a few weeks she would send me to an ear, nose and throat specialist but it came and went all the time.

Then my hairdresser commented that my hair had got very dry and it had receded quite a lot since I last had my hair done. By this time I was feeling tired all the time.
